![]() Theoretically, it’s the simplest way to monetise a hack. We spoke of this iconic cyber villain in our 2019 annual cyber security report, and highlighted its continuing prevalence in our 2020 report too. This makes it an effective way for hackers to make money. Research from Sophos shows that from 2017 to 2020, ransomware campaigns have only dropped 3%, and 51% of companies are still hit by ransomware. You may remember ransomware from its sell-out 2017 tour (you might recall its smash hit, WannaCry, which crippled the NHS), and it’s not gone away. That malware in question could be adware, cryptomining software or even our old friend ransomware. In addition to this, email addresses can be sold on to enable fraudsters to commit phishing campaigns, which in turn could lead to identity theft or the spreading of malware for other monetisation streams, such as whaling (we’ll get to that later). A particular note-worthy case was 2020's easyJet hack, where the personal details of over 9,000,000 people fell into hackers’ hands. Hotel chain Marriott was hacked in 20 (will they ever learn?), and the vast amount of data stolen, which included passport numbers, will certainly end up for sale on the dark web. ![]() Personal data is valuable as it can be used by those in the know to commit identity theft. Personal data lifted from compromised databases (particularly email addresses) can be sold. The dark web might sound like something from a cheap fantasy book, but there’s a lot of dodgy activities that goes on there. Whilst this information can be used to commit identity theft, those who purloin such data tend to sell it on the dark web instead. Remember, most hackers are going to give all of them a go at the same time, so you need to be alert.Īs any good penetration tester will tell you, compromising a confidential corporate database is a challenging hack more often than not, so why do hackers do it? Well, for the hundreds of millions of records containing personal information. However there are those who embrace the dark side become a hacker – and there’s a lot of ways a hacker can monetise their misdeeds.įrom simple, age-old tactics to clever new strategies, there’s a lot that keeps the hackers’ economy afloat. The above-board way is to become a penetration tester, which can lead to a long, lucrative and satisfying career. There are a lot of ways someone with a certain set of cyber skills can make money. Whilst there are undoubtedly those who just hack for fun, the majority of malicious hacking is done, unsurprisingly, for financial gain. With this in mind, it’s fair to say people tend not to put a lot of effort into something unless they know they’re going to be financially rewarded for it. These are figures that I’ve just made up, but I said it in the Bulletproof office, and everyone nodded, which either means it speaks a certain truth or, once again, everyone is doing their best to ignore me. 80% of all human endeavour is committed to making money, with the remaining 20% spent finding interesting ways to spend it. program at the University of Texas at El Paso. Einstein worked out general relativity in 1915, and it turns out that that is the theory that matches observation. Here it is. It turns out that Nordstrom's theory, although it is theoretically possible, is not the one nature chose. So the field view and the curved spacetime view have been present since the start. Einstein (who had been pursuing a geometric theory) and Fokker then showed in 1914 that Nordstrom's theory could be rewritten with gravity as curved spacetime. The first such theories were those of Nordstrom's in 1912-1913, which considered relativistic gravity as a field in flat spacetime. After special relativity was understood, people searched for a theory of gravity compatible with special relativity. A good readable essay may be found at is interesting history to this idea. None other than Steven Weinberg has adopted this view. It may also be viewed as a field theory and therefore should be quantizable. What satisfied me in the end was that it has been noted that warped space-time is just one possible interpretation of Einstein's equations. Manifestly Gauge-Invariant Cosmological Perturbation Theory from Full Loop Quantum Gravityįor some time I found myself puzzled by why quantum gravity was being pursued since I subscribed to something like "general relativity is just geometry". Gravitons are also mentioned in a very recent LQG paper. Here's a more recent review, where there is also discussion about how to get the correct graviton behavior at low energies. Graviton propagator in loop quantum gravityĮugenio Bianchi, Leonardo Modesto, Carlo Rovelli, Simone Speziale I'm not sure what the current status of LQG is, but this shows that they do expect a graviton to emerge in some regime if the theory is successful. I'm not so sure about specifics in causal sets, but here is an attempt to see if LQG can get the graviton. Yes, I do mean that if LQG and causal sets are successful, then there will be a graviton in those theories. Is this true of quantum gravity theories that quantize space-time along the lines of loop quantum gravity and causal dynamical sets? Or are you presuming that these theory are not successful candidates? So, while a graviton isn't really inevitable, if gravity has a quantum nature, it is by far the odds on favorite explanation for how gravity works. In sum, if there is such a thing as quantum gravity, we know lots of qualitative things about what the theory would look like and especially, what properties a graviton would have. But, it turns out that making a quantum gravity theory along these lines that works is hard (among other things the most straightforward approach to doing this is "non-renormalizable" which from a practical perspective means that it is basically impossible to do lots of kinds of calculations with a theory like this in our current state of knowledge). ![]() Naively, a graviton based theory seems like a good way to reconcile these inconsistencies (not the only way, but certainly the most obvious one). There are deep theoretical inconsistencies between the Standard Model of Particle Physics and General Relativity that have a lot to do with the Standard Model being formulated as a quantum theory in Minkowski space (where special relativity, but not general relativity applies), while General Relativity is formulated as a classical, deterministic theory in space-time that has geometric curvature. But, the vast majority of situations where we use General Relativity are situations where the classical limit of a quantum gravity theory and General Relativity are indistinguishable with current technology. They would only be identical in circumstances where those quantum theory specific properties are negligible in importance. ![]() quantum tunneling and the stochastic nature of the theory). They wouldn't be identical, because quantum gravity would have some properties that are exclusive to quantum theories that are absent in General Relativity (e.g. It is that a theory of spin-2 massless gravitons with a coupling that is a function of the mass-energy of another particle and a coupling constant functionally related to Newton's constant is essentially identical in its behavior as a theory of gravity to General Relativity in the classical limit. It isn't so much that they are inevitable. Summary:: Why are gravitons expected to exist when gravity is just warped space time?Īs per the summary I don't understand why physicists talk as if gravitons are inevitable, when gravity is just curved spacetime? Mint sometimes grows wild in woodland areas or near old abandoned farmsteads. Mint prefers rich, moist soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. It gets a bit leggy when grown indoors, but doesn’t require as much sun as most herbs. If you live north of zone 5, simply pot it up in the fall and keep it on a kitchen windowsill. Hardy between USDA zones 5 and 9, mint grows in all but the coldest parts of the United States. Trim mint back frequently to keep it in check and divide it every 3 to 4 years. Plant it in a pot sunken in the ground or among other vigorous plants that can hold their own. Mint spreads by runners and will quickly take over your garden if given free rein. In fact, mint is so easy to grow that it can quickly become too much of a good thing. Mint is among the simplest of herbs to grow because unlike Mediterranean herbs, it tolerates light shade and cold winter temperatures. Wondering where to find mint leaves? First, consider growing some in your garden. Fresh leaves have the brightest color and flavor, but dried leaves can be used in a pinch. But mint is equally at home in salads or sauces. Today, mint most often finds its place as a means of hospitality in a refreshing mint julep or glass of cold lemonade served to a guest on a hot summer day. To show their appreciation to Philemon and Baucis, the Gods turned the couple’s humble home into a temple. Suddenly, the strangers revealed their true identity: they were the Greek Gods, Zeus and Hermes.
